An interim CFO in Belgium is a senior finance executive deployed full time for a fixed term, called interim financieel directeur in Dutch-speaking Flanders and directeur financier de transition or DAF de transition in French-speaking Wallonia and Brussels. Finance, Administration and Legal is the largest functional slice of the Belgian interim market at 64% of all missions recorded in 2023 (Federgon 2023 annual report), and the supply side is organised around finance-specialist firms, recruitment-group interim desks and advisory practices rather than comparators. Language is the defining local feature: a trilingual FR, NL and EN profile is the standard in Brussels, Dutch plus English suits Flemish mandates and French is essential in Wallonia.
Federgon reported member interim management revenue of €183 million in 2024, up 3.24% on the €177.3 million recorded in 2023 (Federgon 2024 annual statistical series), with finance the most established interim function. Emerton Leadership estimates that finance roles, including interim CFO, financial controller and accounting manager, alone represent 30-40% of total Belgian interim management demand, driven by year-end closings, ERP implementations and M&A transactions (Emerton Leadership analysis). Demand is concentrated in Brussels, while the labour shortage is most acute in Flanders. The market entered a contractionary phase in early 2025 to 2026, consistent with the European-wide deceleration in the 2024 INIMA survey, which recorded a 65% utilisation rate and average daily rates of €994 across Europe (INIMA survey 2024).

Belgian interim CFO engagements are governed by the schijnzelfstandigheid or faux independant regime under Title XIII of the Programmawet of 27 December 2006, also called the Arbeidsrelatieswet (Programmawet 27 December 2006). Article 333 sets four general criteria for distinguishing employment from independent collaboration: the will of the parties, freedom to organise working hours, freedom to organise the work and absence of hierarchical control (Arbeidsrelatieswet, art. 333). Interim management at CFO level is not a high-risk sector, so only the four general criteria apply (Arbeidsrelatieswet 2006). Most interim CFOs invoice through a management company, a BV or SRL, which charges Belgian VAT at 21% recoverable by the client (PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries Belgium 2025). Parties can secure a binding three-year ruling on status from the Commission des Relations de Travail before the engagement starts (Belgium.be Commission relations de travail), and from 1 February 2026 Level 4 misclassification fines under the Social Criminal Code rose to €3,000-€35,000 for an individual or €6,000-€70,000 for a legal entity (Baker McKenzie 2026).

Published Belgian rates for an interim finance manager or CFO ad interim run €1,440-€2,800/day excluding VAT (Apex League 2025), with transformation, M&A or crisis mandates at the top of the band and routine or SME coverage trending toward €1,440-€1,700/day. A separate large-corporate French-speaking interim CFO specification lists €1,200-€1,500/day (Marks Sattin Belgium 2026), and House of Boards lists €900-€1,300/day for a standard director or CXO mandate rising to €1,500-€1,800/day for complex or crisis work (House of Boards 2026).
No published tariff grid splits rates between Flanders and Wallonia. Published Belgian bands run €900-€1,300/day for a standard director or CXO mandate, rising to €1,500-€1,800/day for complex or crisis assignments (House of Boards 2026), while the finance-specialist grid reaches €1,440-€2,800/day for transformation or M&A mandates (Apex League 2025). A trilingual FR, NL and EN profile is the standard in Brussels, Dutch plus English suits Flemish mandates and French is essential in Wallonia.
The common triggers are year-end closings, ERP and finance transformation programmes that run 6-18 months, M&A, carve-outs and restructuring, plus cover for maternity, sick-leave or a sudden departure (Emerton Leadership analysis). Flexibility is cited by 75% of Belgian CFOs and finance directors surveyed by Robert Half as a key advantage, with 64% believing interim deployment leads to greater efficiency (Robert Half survey). Scale-ups also deploy interim CFOs to professionalise reporting ahead of investment rounds.
The risk to manage is schijnzelfstandigheid or faux independant under the Programmawet of 27 December 2006, the Arbeidsrelatieswet, which sets four general criteria: the will of the parties, freedom to organise working hours, freedom to organise the work and absence of hierarchical control (Arbeidsrelatieswet, art. 333). Most interim CFOs contract through a management company, a BV or SRL, charging Belgian VAT at 21% (PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries Belgium 2025), and parties can request a binding three-year status ruling from the Commission des Relations de Travail before starting (Belgium.be Commission relations de travail). Misclassification fines rose from 1 February 2026 to €3,000-€35,000 for an individual or €6,000-€70,000 for a legal entity (Baker McKenzie 2026).
An interim CFO is deployed full time for a fixed term, typically to cover a vacancy, run a transaction or stabilise reporting, while a fractional CFO works part time on an ongoing basis. In practice the Belgian sources use overlapping rate bands for both, for example €1,200-€1,500/day for a large-corporate interim CFO (Marks Sattin Belgium 2026), and Federgon counts these mandates within the broader interim management market sized at €183 million in member revenue for 2024 (Federgon 2024 annual statistical series).
