An interim CFO in the Netherlands, known locally as an interim financieel directeur, is a senior finance executive deployed for a fixed term to cover a sudden vacancy, steer a transaction or transformation or restore financial control. The Netherlands is regarded as the birthplace of interim management and one of the most developed markets in Europe, with an estimated 10,000 active interim managers (Raad voor Interim Management). The supply side is organised around finance-specialist firms, executive-search boutiques and matching platforms rather than comparators.
The Schaekel & Partners Interim Index reported an average hourly rate across all sectors of €140/hour in its 22nd edition, with the financial services segment at €155/hour (Schaekel Interim Index 22, 2025/2026). Finance is a structurally tight segment: the number of finance assignments grew 31% in 2023 while the supply of interim finance professionals rose only 6% (Planet Interim Index 2023). Demand is concentrated around ERP and digital transformation, ESG reporting, M&A and private-equity portfolio work, restructuring and turnaround and cover for an absent permanent CFO (Fellowfield, June 2025 and Bridgewell 2026).

Dutch interim CFO engagements fall under the Wet DBA, which targets schijnzelfstandigheid, false self-employment where a relationship presented as a self-employed assignment is in fact an employment relationship, and places responsibility for correct classification on both the client and the contractor (Wet DBA, in force since 1 May 2016). The enforcement moratorium ended on 1 January 2025 and full enforcement, including default fines for clients, is scheduled for 1 January 2027, with a partial soft landing in 2026 (Belastingdienst handhavingsplan 2025 and KNOV 2026). On 21 April 2026 the Tweede Kamer adopted a bill introducing a civil-law presumption of employment for workers billing under €38/hour, intended to take effect 1 July 2026 (Houthoff, April 2026): the threshold does not bind interim CFOs who typically bill €140-€250/hour, but the related burden of proof does. Practitioners contract as ZZP or through their own BV, and short specialist assignments without structural embedding in the organisation remain treated as self-employed work after 1 January 2025 (ScoliX 2025).

Interim CFO day rates in the Netherlands typically run €1,000-€1,500/day (OakhillFinancial Services, May 2025). On an hourly basis, regular SME and scale-up mandates are billed at €180-€230/hour and complex private-equity, M&A and transition mandates at €200-€250/hour (Fellowfield, June 2025), with rates moving by company size, sector and mandate complexity.
Common triggers in the Netherlands are ERP and digital transformation, ESG reporting setup, M&A and private-equity portfolio work in the first 12 to 24 months after acquisition or ahead of an exit, restructuring and turnaround and bridging an absent permanent CFO during illness or parental leave (Fellowfield, June 2025 and Bridgewell 2026). Demand for finance assignments grew 31% in 2023 while supply rose only 6%, pointing to structural scarcity (Planet Interim Index 2023).
Engagements fall under the Wet DBA, which targets schijnzelfstandigheid and makes both client and contractor responsible for correct classification (Wet DBA, in force since 1 May 2016). The enforcement moratorium ended on 1 January 2025 and full enforcement is scheduled for 1 January 2027, with a partial soft landing in 2026 (KNOV 2026). Interim CFOs contract as ZZP or through their own BV, and model agreements approved before 6 September 2024 remain valid through 31 December 2029 if followed in practice (EY 2025).
An interim CFO is deployed largely full time for a fixed term to resolve a specific situation, with a day-rate model and an average assignment length of about 14.5 months (Schaekel Interim Index 21, 2024). A fractional CFO works part time or on call for several clients at once, a model growing among SMEs and scale-ups, with monthly retainers reported at €2,000-€8,000 for SMEs in 2026 (Finnovate 2026).
The Raad voor Interim Management (RIM) is the Dutch trade body for interim management firms, with 15 selected member firms as of 2024 (RIM 2024). Members subscribe to the RIM bureaucode, fully updated in 2024 with a complaints procedure and built on the values of expertise, reliability, responsibility and independence (RIM, September 2024). Separately, the IM-Register is an independent public register of individual interim managers, with around 600 registered in 2024 (ManagementSite 2024).
